Style advice from Mark: This is one of my favourite products because it allows you to build completely bespoke shelving at a relatively modest cost. Using timber shelves, mild steel flat bar and Clam Brackets, you can create shelving that looks completely built-in while being made to suit the exact proportions of the room.

Installation:

You'll need:

• Timber shelves: 19–25mm (¾"–1") thick, cut to your chosen length and depth.

• Mild steel flat bar: 30mm × 12mm (1 3/16" × ½"), running from floor to ceiling.

• Vertical steel bars: Two per section, with additional bars every 500mm on wider units.

• Brass screws: No.12, No.14 or No.16 flat-head screws, approximately 75mm (3") long.

• Clam Brackets: One approximately every 500mm along each shelf to secure the shelving to the wall.

For the neatest finish, recess the steel bars slightly into the ceiling before decorating.

Also helpful: an attractive tradesperson — the steel takes a little patience to drill on site.
